Google.de, Google.ch, Google.fr – Which Google Results Are You Actually Tracking?

Why the Google domain alone does not determine which search results you see – and why country and language are crucial for rank tracking.

Google.de for Germany, Google.ch for Switzerland, and Google.fr for France.

Sounds pretty straightforward.

If you want to check a ranking in Germany, you use Google.de. For Switzerland, you use Google.ch. For France, you use Google.fr.

Except that Google doesn’t work quite that simply anymore.

When you access google.de, you don’t simply end up with a completely independent German version of Google Search. When delivering search results, Google takes into account factors including country, language, and location – and this combination can determine which SERP you actually see.

This becomes particularly interesting when multiple countries or languages are involved.

Because German is not the same as Germany.

And French is not the same as France.

A user in Berlin and a user in Zurich can search for the same German keyword and still get different results.

That’s why, when it comes to rank tracking, the question isn’t simply:

“Google where?”

It’s:

“For which market, in which language, and under which regional conditions?”

Germany Is Not Switzerland

Let’s take a simple example.

A company wants to be found for a keyword in Germany. It checks its position and sees: Position 6.

Everything looks good.

Then the same keyword is checked for Switzerland – and the page suddenly ranks at position 14.

That’s not an error. And it’s not a contradiction.

Google doesn’t deliver the same results everywhere. A good ranking in Germany therefore doesn’t automatically mean a good ranking in Switzerland.

Because Switzerland isn’t simply “Germany with a different Google domain.”

German-Speaking Switzerland Is Not Germany

People search in German in Zurich. They also search in German in Berlin.

The language is the same. The country isn’t.

And that means the search results can differ as well.

Swiss providers, regional websites, local signals, and the specific characteristics of the Swiss market can all influence the SERP.

German is not the same as Germany.

That’s why simply specifying the language is not enough for rank tracking.

French-Speaking Switzerland Is Not France

The difference becomes even clearer in the French-speaking part of Switzerland.

People search in French in Geneva. They also search in French in Paris.

Again, the language is the same – but the market is different.

A website that ranks well in France will therefore not necessarily rank well in French-speaking Switzerland.

French is not the same as France.

What Does This Mean for Rank Tracking?

This makes a seemingly simple question somewhat more interesting:

“Where should this keyword be found?”

In which country?

In which language?

And, where relevant, in which regional context?

Only this combination describes the search situation that is actually supposed to be measured.

A ranking without this information is just a number.

Position 7 – great. But where?

Which Market Is the Ranking Being Measured For?

That’s why the SERP Checker does not put the Google domain at the center.

What matters are the parameters of the actual search situation:

Country and language.

Germany and German are different from Switzerland and German.

Switzerland and French are different from France and French.

These differences should not be overlooked when tracking rankings.

Because when multiple markets are being managed, it’s not enough to know where a page ranks somewhere on Google.

What matters is where it ranks in your target market.

A SERP Is Not Simply a SERP

This is perhaps the most important insight.

There isn’t simply one Google position for a keyword.

There is a position for a specific search situation.

Country. Language. Search query. Result.

Anyone who wants to measure rankings should therefore first know where they are actually searching.
